Another King novel down. Only three remaining to be read.
I didn't have particularly high expectations headed into Dreamcatcher. That's good. It was... not great.
I really liked Part One. But the train came off the rails. Low three-star rating here.

Team King-Should-Take-More-Opioids, checking in!
I'm giving this a lot of leeway because it’s completely bonkers. Some of it works, a lot of it doesn’t, but it’s SUCH a huge swing I can’t help but respect it for how bananas it is.

It had so much potential, but it lost me towards the end. I felt like there was too much going on and too much bouncing around.
“There was no one to blame when the dust cleared. And even if there was, what good did it do?”
Reading some of the reviews it seems like the thing people didn’t like was that this is an alien invasion book. Ohhhkaaay. Not at all sure why that’s a problem?
For me, this book was great! King is the absolute best at character stories and Dreamcatcher completely delivers that. It’s chock full of all kinds of terrific characters, good, bad, and just ordinary. I love that even a waitress with only a brief appearance still comes across as a fully formed person and not just a scene placeholder. That’s what ultimately makes King’s stories really come alive.
King wrote this particular book during a time when he was in a lot of physical pain, and that subject is dealt with so well. The emotional aspect of chronic pain, the ongoing feeling that your body is not fully on your side, the tiresomeness of the whole thing all came across acutely and with sharp realism.
There are many little things, small scenes, wonderfully emotional moments that make up the story, creating such a rich tapestry of friendship which makes all the truly horrific things that happens to these boys/men in Dreamcatcher much more difficult to bear.
