Just ok. Not a page turner. Not one of his best, in my opinion. However, I finished it, and that is saying something becasue when I really don't like a book, I do not finish it. I don't have enough time in my life to read books I don't like. I DO try to give it enough time to really know if I don't like it or if it is just a slow starter.

I enjoy a Grisham book about once a year. There is always something that I find interesting--in this case the race issues were right on point for where we are as a nation--and things that I am disappointed in. The things that disappoint are often more in tune with reality than a typical book would be and have their purpose in the story, but I still find myself knowing I am not going to be happy about the outcome the whole time I am reading which is less than ideal (and who loves predictable anyway?). I also think this book could have been edited down 50 to 80 pages.

Made you think and kept me reading til the book was finished, beautifully written, keeps you on your toes on whether or not Dante will live or die.....

Pretty dry for a Grisham book. This one just felt like a chore to read. The best part was in the author's notes where he basically tells people not to criticize him for inaccuracies because he doesn't care enough to research most things.

When I was in high school and college, Grisham was my go to author for pleasure reading when I had a break from my stacks of required reading. It has been about a decade since I have read a book of his, but reading this reminded me why I used to enjoy his books so much. I really love his writing style. He will probably never be included in "The Canon" of best writers of all time, but he sure knows how to spin an engrossing tale! This book had me glued to my Kindle Reader and I found my dreams revolving around what I read. My only issue with this book was that it was obvious that the author was using to it push an agenda - opposition of the death penalty. The didacticism would have bothered me more if it wasn't a platform that I happen to fundamentally agree with. In any case, my Grisham appetite has been whetted and I will no doubt soon be reading another one of his novels that I have missed out on in the last ten years.

I DNF’d it, just couldn’t see where the story was going and I couldn’t care less about the main character.

This isn't one of my favorite John Grisham books but it is a good book nonetheless. I listened to it on audiobook and just couldn't put it down once I had my earphones in. I had to keep listening to find out what happens. Yeah, a 14+ hour audiobook, over two days. I have a huge book hangover, let me tell you.

Why only 3 stars then? Because as good as this book was, John Grisham has much better books out there that I loved and still only gave 4 stars. I enjoyed this book for its story, it was compelling and heartbreaking and at times completely infuriating. I enjoyed the telling of the story, the emotions it evoked out of me, the uncertainty, the injustice and the fight against it, the race against time. I enjoyed the journey very much while it lasted, but it's not journey I'd like to take again.
