Wow, what a book. My copy was 867 pages long, and I sped through it in just over a week. It's dark, gritty, unpleasantly visceral (often literally), full of gore and slime and excrement. It's got some of the absolute weirdest aliens I've ever encountered (and I've read a fair amount of weird sci-fi) - cactus people, people with human bodies but a large beetle for a head, frog people, giant bird people. It uses vocabulary that I'd never, or only very rarely, come across. It's complicated and clever and gripping.
Things this book reminded me of: The Sandman. Blade Runner. The Great When. The first Expanse novel (Leviathan Wakes). The really prosthetic-heavy, squishy, gross sci fi films of the 90s, like eXistenZ.
You basically spend your time in a complicated, sprawling, London-inspired cityscape. You explore the different human and alien (xenian) societies, meet an array of generally horrible characters, and try to keep everything straight in your head. There are lots of horrible new predators who want to kill people. The book likes to push the envelope on what can be a sentient creature and how consciousnesses might be different in different forms. It's clever, but not too pretentious (maybe a bit pretentious).
I enjoyed the plot and the characters a lot. It's pretty male-protagonist heavy (I've read a lot of stuff by women recently so this stood out to me, but it's not unusual) and the female characters seem to come off worse, sadly, but honestly no one comes out of this book well. It was gripping, and the bits that were trying to be scary mostly succeeded for me. It's extremely unpleasant - I found parts about the way people were punished through body modifications particularly upsetting - you can glance at the content warnings to get the idea that this is not a walk in the park read. But it didn't feel like a slog at all. The plot feels a bit like an opportunity to explore the world, rather than particularly clever in its own right, but I still really enjoyed it and it had a few twists and turns.
I will definitely read the next one (The Scar), which I have already, but after a palate cleanser. There's clearly loads of the world to explore - this only takes place in the huge city, really, but there are obviously other cities and countries outside it.
