There are many reasons that I am thankful that I was born when I was. My sex can vote. The FDA and the EPA exist. (For now.) Mostly, I am thankful for all the medical advances of the last century. I am thankful for antibiotics, antisepsis, and anesthetic. After reading Thomas Morris’ The Mystery of the Exploding Teeth and Other Curiosities from the History of Medicine, I am unspeakably thankful that I was born decades after doctors prescribed enemas for everything, bleed everyone even if they were already bleeding, and never, ever washed their hands...

Read the rest of my review at A Bookish Type. I received a free copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley, for review consideration.

I like to read a little a bit before bedtime, but nothing too exciting or else I will stay up too late reading. I thought this book would be a good one for bedtime reading but, boy, was I wrong. It was not the subject matter - it was the author's writing style. He was so engaging and humorous that I found myself having a hard time putting the book down, I just wanted to keep reading more weird medical stories from the past.

That being said, this is not a book for the squeamish. If in depth details on medical treatments or accidental/self inflicted mutilation make you feel faint, you probably do not want to read this.

Although the medical treatments from the past seem bizarre to us today, the author is careful to point out that the medical practitioner's were using the accepted (and sometimes cutting edge) treatments of their time.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.

A very entertaining voyage through the more unusual side of history. If you’ve ever wanted to know just how many ailments 15th century doctors tried to cure with enemas, this is the book for you!

Strange and fascinating, and the result of excellent research. But I gave up about two-thirds of the way through, as the accumulation of horrors began to turn my stomach.

Hilarious and not overly technical or full of medical jargon (everything odd is explained). Would recommend for anyone looking for a laugh, or a reason to boggle at the human experience.

Second time listening to this. It was better this time around and honestly some of the stuff that people have done is mind blowing and mind numbing. A very interesting listen/read. Highly recommend.
