This one fell flat for me. I think I'm not that into the premise of displaced Indian royalty, first of all, and so much of this book was so heartbreaking, but told rather than shown. I didn't truly believe a lot of the characters in their actions or motivations, and I'm not totally sure how to fix that. It was just all kind of deflated, and then wrapped up very very quickly with seemingly no snags, which just didn't feel very true. I did appreciate the deep and hard issues discussed, and I do really enjoy Persuasion and it was nice to see this more diverse adaptation.

The amount of contrived plot in here really bothered me. I also just didn't gel with Sonali Dev's writing style. Sadly, I'm not interested in going on with this book.
