This book is darkly funny — zany while still managing to be tender. It’s the a sort of coming-of-age story for Greta, who one might expect had already come of age. I love how she is forced to confront her trauma, to realize who she really is — even when other people aren’t looking. This book has everything: sapphic flings, obsessive romance, dogs, donkeys, bees, gossip, death, honesty, suicidal ideation. Beagin really seems to understand the ways trauma can manifest itself in different kinds of people, which I think played a big role in Greta being such a successful protagonist. She’s weird and funny and dark and sometimes whiny — a questionable lead, at least — but she is also fascinating.
