I wouldn't say it's badly written, but for such a short story, this still took forever and a day to get through, and it was nearly impossible to get into. 

I guess the moral is about being the bigger person? Seems like Fern is the one who wins out in terms of posterity, but there's no real satisfaction from the whole endeavour.
