I loved this book so much more the second time around, I think because I knew what was coming in terms of the plot so it was a bit less shocking. It is beautifully written, very much a slice of life of youth and how the happenings in Bruce's youth have impacted his adult life. The descriptions of the ocean and surfing are dripping in elegance and relaxation while still capturing the tense and dangerous atmosphere of the ocean and the circumstances of Bruce and Looney. Winton critiques ideas of masculinity and emotional suppression, and uses surfing as a device in which this idea can be deconstructed but also heightened in the scenes of everyday life.

Moderate: Grief
