I found it to be a very atypical romance since it dwells mostly on séances and past lives, ghosts and such. Although I liked the story, the romance part didn't really satisfy me and it actually bored me a little since I don't really think there was any cause for the protagonists to be apart and the whole "I must not be foolish and fall for the sweet talk" just made me roll my eyes. But the story seemed well done, I thought I had it figured out but there was a twist in it.

Intriguing

I enjoyed this book overall. I enjoy stories about quirky families. Normally I don’t like stories with “links” to the past, but I liked the one here. The character of Olivia was fairly independent, and she’s capable of taking care of herself. The development of the rest of the characters wasn’t quite as good, but they were okay. I liked Olivia’s Great-Uncle Ballard. Some of the terms in the steamier scenes did make me giggle: “damp cave” for the inside of one’s mouth. That aside, I plan on reading the next one. I feel like maybe the Morlands are just getting warmed up.

I've never read anything quite like this before - historical romance, with a solid haunted house plot to boot! I wasn't sure what to expect going in, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. The main characters were likable, particularly the heroine - a bit more prone to fainting than I'm usually okay with, but intelligent and spunky nonetheless. The paranormal plot wasn't scary, but it did present a good mystery, and the glimpses of the past were intriguing, to say the least. I also appreciated that it wasn't the usual sort of plot where the woman can communicate with the spirits because of her mystical woman-ness but the guy doesn't see anything (and thinks she's probably a little crazy). That storyline gets real frustrating real quick, so it was a refreshing change here that both the hero and the heroine are in on the creepy goings-on, and also that they're believably skeptical, but not stupidly so in the face of clear evidence (another frequent pitfall in supernatural stories I've read).

If I had one complaint, it's that the prose in the adult scenes was most decidedly lavender-tinted; it was a little cringeworthy in some places. But there were only two such scenes and they weren't over-long, so I can get over it. Overall it was an excellent read, and I'm looking forward to more from this author.

Candace Camp has come through again for me with another great read! Mesmerized, kept me coming back for more romance and suspense of what will happen at the end. It was a who done it, oh no she didn’t and man, I better start sleeping with a bat. Once these 20/20’s see something travel through a wall and disappear. I wouldn’t stand there and ask did you see that?
No sir! I wouldn’t care what I’m wearing, even if I was stark naked. I would yell: Tom, I’m outta here and head straight for door. In my hysterical mad dash, I’m shouting back, Tom forget the damn bags, we’ll send for a footman to retrieve them later. As I’m running down the drive.
Stephen and Olivia pulled off a good sleuth detective team to thwart the evil, swindling, mad villains that dared to enter the walls of Blackhope Hall. My fellow readers, I recommend this book. Happy reading. Until next time.

A good book with plenty of twists and turns, but those same twists and turns stopped this book from achieving anything higher. There were so many things going on but the people in the book didn't really go anywhere, or interact with others. There were three or four different plots going on in this book and that is not mentioning the sub plots. You almost end up losing interest because you get bounced around so much from one plot to another and then from 'yes this is what happened' to 'no thats wrong it was this way' and then back to 'no it's what we said first'. *sigh* Exhausting! I did enjoy the conclusion to the various plots but then it seemed that the ending was rushed and then cut off. Not sure if I will continue with this series or not but 3 stars for this book.
