I feel that Kelly Yang hit the ball out of the park with this timely book in the voices of young people. What a great way to introduce immigration issues to the tween set (and older), as well as issues of systemic racism, and the power of community and cooperation. Ms. Yang even touches on the racism of Chinese-Americans. (FYI- White folx aren’t the only people who have that one racist relative.) This book would be great for California 4th and 5th graders as they study California and US history.
Thank you, Kelly!!!
Thank you, Kelly!!!
An amazing follow-up to Front Desk. Mia the activist does it again. Speaking up for those that don’t have a voice and showing the true meaning of being an immigrant in this country.
I don’t care how old you are. You need to read these books.
**set in 1994**
Phenomenal follow-up, emotionally charged.

I liked this follow up to [b:Front Desk|36127488|Front Desk (Front Desk, #1)|Kelly Yang|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1507986199l/36127488._SX50_.jpg|51903030], although I didn't like it as much as I enjoyed [b:Front Desk|36127488|Front Desk (Front Desk, #1)|Kelly Yang|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1507986199l/36127488._SX50_.jpg|51903030].
The cast of characters were worth following. This follow up gave Yang a chance to develop further character studies that weren't able to be explored in her first book. The topic of illegal immigration in the book was a timely one, considering the fate of immigrants in our country in recent years. I also enjoyed the afterward in which Yang describes her own interaction with Prop 187 in her childhood.

I enjoyed this continuation of the Front Desk series. While fiction, the series has some elements of experiences the author had growing up. I'm looking forward to picking up the third book at some poing.

Kelly Yang has done it again! This is the second "historical fiction" I've read recently where it feels like it could have been written today :( So good and I loved being back in this world.
