“What’s it like to be…undocumented?” I asked. Lupe was quiet a long time, playing with her drawing pencil with in fingers. “It’s like being a pencil, when everyone else is a pen,” she finally said. “You worry you can be erased anytime.”
I enjoyed this sequel to Front Desk. She tackles Prop 187 and immigration laws, and I think Mia is just such a great female protagonist. I love that she loves to write, and I loved the teacher aspect of this one even though it was painful in the beginning.

I’m so conflicted about this book. While the struggles and hurts shared make my heart ache, this book also makes the mistake of generalizing immigrants with illegal immigrants. I have literally no experience in this area though and the author does, so I will trust her judgment.
Enjoyment-wise, a solid three stars.

I loved this book. I didn't expect "Front Desk" to have a sequel, but "Three Keys" really flowed well with the previous storyline, teaching us more lessons in race, immigration, and understanding people who are different than us.
I would recommend this book to anyone willing to read it. It is a super important novel!
The only thing I didn't like was the title. The title should be a recurring theme found in the book, but the title of "Three Keys" was based on the [random] last sentence of the book. I'm disappointed about that.
