Mia Tang is still working at the front desk of the Calivista Motel and on her writing as she heads into sixth grade. Her new teacher Mrs. Welch has casted some doubts on her goals, but with the help of her friends and the weeklies at the Motel, Mia will overcome them.
This books takes place during the contentious 1994 election and the vote for Proposition 187. The themes of social justice, immigrants' rights, wealth, and law are strong. Yang is a talented writer and these heavy topics are handled thoroughly and through the lens of hopeful youth. This book is a treat; I highly recommend it!

Wow another incredible book from Kelly Yang! The sequel to Front Desk brilliantly tackles issues such as immigration and activism and I LOVE IT SO MUCH!
Mia is so brave and such an inspiration! Also Lupe and Jason and it’s just wonderful to see kids making a difference...I hope kids read it and feel empowered!
Also loved the challenging of racism and anti-Blackness etc ev ‘don’t hang out with THOSE kinds of people cos they’re a bad influence’ smh take your bigotry and GO!
Love love LOVE the found family at the Calivista Motel and how they love and support and encourage and uplift each other it is so beautiful to see all different kinds of people coming together to show their humanity, kindness and compassion for each other
