Another well-thought and constructed treatise on cartooning by Scott McCloud.

This is ESSENTIAL reading for anyone with an interest in....well, making comics! Though it is also an excellent reference for people with an interest in digging into the mechanics of storytelling in the comic book medium. Like his seminal work "Understanding Comics", McCloud's broad approach to the material and fun, laid-back style makes the concepts that he discusses easily digestable. It also means that many of the concepts he explores - such as pacing and character creation - can be applied to storytelling of any kind, despite much of it focusing on the art side of the comic book equation. McCloud is a master communicator with an all-encompassing understanding of the comics industry and art in general, always honest, down-to-earth, and acknowledging of when things that he says could change quickly.

Also useful are the additions of chapter notes which include writing and drawing exercises, and a full bibliography. Strongly recommended for anyone with even a passing interest in the medium.

Another brilliant book about comics from Scott McCloud. His theories on body language (imbalance) and word/image relationships, as well as the detailed basics of Clarity (Moment, Framing, Image, Word, Flow) were on-par with all the fun, insightful stuff we loved about his analyses in Understanding Comics. A great addition to my shelf on understanding the comics biz.

Much better than understanding comics imo. A good look into art, comic, and storytelling in general. I went through a comic phase when I was kid when I first read this, but I have found it valuable in writing, speaking, and acting. McCloud does a great job of distilling important lessons into easy to understand and fun to read examples.

In my review of Understanding Comics, I compare McCloud to a teacher or professor who makes learning easy and/or fun. That's still pretty much the case here, but he's diving so deep into the mechanics that the material is denser and therefore a little less fun.

That's not to say it's not well presented, it just requires a bit more dedication than Understanding Comics did. Which makes sense when you think about the leap from "understanding" to "making."

It's also important to point out that this isn't a literal how-to manual. It's still more of a graphic textbook on theory.

It's still a great book and essential for people interested in the medium.

Absolutely one of my favorite books. I have read Understanding Comics, Reinventing Comics, and Making Comics multiple times each. Together, they have given me so much understanding regarding storytelling, perception of art, and comics as a medium.

For this book specifically: this is both a "conclusion" to the "trilogy" and a standalone companion of sorts. It's more interactive than the other two while still providing a framework for why these things are important (or at least important to think about). It's come in handy for me multiple times, and not just while making comics. The malleability of this book to other art forms is impressive, to say the least.

Read all three. Then again, I'm a massive glutton for this kind of passionate knowledge dispensing and find it endlessly enjoyable.

This book will make you think about the medium so much, I loved it. Even for me as a game developer it provided a lot of insights that I can use making games. Scott did it again (for the third time!)
