On the whole a good read and I was pleasantly surprised by the direction the plot went in. My only beef, which is a personal one, is that I tend to get turned off by the "Super Hero" character where one person somehow succeeds in every situation no matter what, as our main character does here. It tends to make the book a little monotonous as you can't add much tension. Looking forward to reading the sequel.
3.5/5. The book is a promising start to a space opera, and so long as the author stayed on science / intrigue / politics / etc it was a fine read. Unfortunately, every 4-5 chapters Gannon tries to get a few of his characters romantically involved, and the result is always stilted awkward nonsense.
I read this on Kindle b/c it was free and the sequel recently got nominated for an award.
The prose is somewhat clunky and clichéd, and our hero is such a blatant wish-fulfilment character that he comes across as a tiresome know-it-all. In fact, thinking about it, I’m not sure any of the main characters show much evidence of having, you know, characters.

This was also an entertaining read though it did take some time to build to the action part of the book. The main character is somewhat of jack of all trades and never fails to have the answer to anything faced during the book. This could have been toned down some what and I will have to see how the character is written in the preceding books in this series. The author also spent a lot of time with building the world characteristics so I hope these are utilized to good purpose in further reading...
3.5 Stars for a slow start but a great ending. Looking forward to reading more in this series.

This book was one of the best "hard" sci-fi books I've read in a long time. Good characters (human and exosapiens), plot, and science. On to the next book in the series.
