reflective slow-paced

Young adult contemporary realistic romance. Carmen has just finished her senior year, but doesn't officially have her diploma yet because her internship went sour and she has to do another one. So she has started working for Dreams Come True, as a party princess and office assistant. When she gets decked out as Belle for her first party, she is surprised to discover that her ex is playing the role of the Beast. She is forced to deal with the mixed feelings she has towards him. Soon another wrench in the plans occurs-- the Dreams crew will be dancing at her estranged cousin Ariana's quinceanera. Carmen has to navigate family drama, relationship drama, and her own uncertain future-- all while keeping up with the princess image.

This book was very slow. All of the issues that happened around Carmen's 15th birthday are explained in detail, not formal flashbacks but long reflective memories. It went much faster once I switched to the print book from the audio version, though I also think the second half of the story held my interest better. I had a hard time with Carmen's low self-confidence and tendency to believe the worst of herself and others. I did appreciate that several people in her life had honest conversations with her and she showed real growth by the end of the story.

This was a really cute read and I ended up enjoying it even more than I expected to! I wasn't really routing for the main relationship when the book started, but as it progressed and developed I found myself liking it more and more.

The plot was super cute and fun and I loved the development between the MC and her family. That was the best part for me--watching the family come back together after falling out years before. Super cute read!
