I found it really interesting to see Tolstoy’s growth as a writer both within this book and especially compared to Anna Karenina and War and Peace.
For his first novel, not bad. “Childhood” was probably my favorite section, although it was his weakest writing. Since each section was written years apart, you can really see where he grows as a writer. Tolstoy also does a good job differentiating the voice and style in each stage of development. That being said, Nikolenka really became insufferable in “Youth.”
Overall, this was nothing compared to War and Peace and Anna Karenina, but I think it gave me a better appreciation of where Tolstoy started.
Good translation, too.

Vi una película en la que uno de los personajes afirmaba que el mejor libro para empezar a leer a Tolstói era Juventud. Como mi edición recogía los tres libros, empecé desde Infancia. Lo cual es mejor, puesto que sin Infancia y Adolescencia no se comprende Juventud, ya que fueron concebidos por el autor como un todo y publicados periodicamente en una revista.
Aunque lo he disfrutado, creo, sin embargo, haber leído al Tolstói menos Tolsói. Quiero decir: a un escritor buscando su estilo. Aun así, encontramos ya en estos tres libros los temas que vertebrarán sus posteriores grandes obras, como tengo entendido, a saber: la familia, las pasiones y la naturaleza humana.
