I think that reading The Secret Place followed by The Trespasser was perfect. Moran and Conway's insecurities playing off each other, the deep messy lines.
I'm really thinking that French only gets more brilliant.
Family, belonging, friendship - they're all complex and ugly and beautiful all at the same time.

Sooooo slow! About 100 pages too many.
It took me over a month to finish this book and I normally would have put it down but I wanted to give Tana French the benefit of the doubt. I am liking her books less and less each one that comes out, but this was better than the last one set at the school.

Not my favorite TF. Antoinette is hard to love. I’m tempted to read the first in this duo because i like Steve so much! The solution to this mystery really took me by surprise and i loved the second act, but the first half was just so slow. Good if you like TF.
I thought this was a good book and I enjoyed it just as much as most of the others in this series. Parts were slow but overall, this mystery was strong, intriguing, and worth the read. At first I didn't like Antoinette's character but I grew to love her and really sympathize with her.
I'm always excited about the latest Tana French book and this one did not disappoint. She is such a good writer, you almost forget you're reading a murder mystery, but then one of her many twists and character shifts comes along and you realize how creepy her story really is. As always, at 445 pages, her books are pretty slow in pacing--my only complaint--but it comes together in the end in not some big mind blowing way but instead in a way that is realistic and reasonable after all. Plus who doesn't love a snarky female detective narrator?
- love the descriptive language, feels like Neil Gaiman prose mix with fancy literature & metaphors. Simply brilliant. Some of the best vivid images I've read.
- characters: love Steve & Fleas; Antoinette, not so much but she grew on me; Antoinette is very cynical in general & the person she is is pretty clearly stated in the story (paranoid? maybe. think the world is getting to her? also maybe). Love how all the characters become very real, if not immediately then in the end.
- plot lags a little bit in some places but the narrative keeps my attention. Didn't really like the interrogation scenes with Ant. & Breslin but the conversation between Ant. & Lucy is awesome. Last part becomes very emotional.
- fun read all in all. 4.5/5
