Great book with a terrible ending. It's definitely worth reading. But there's a point where if I knew how bad the ending was, I'd have just not finished the book.
I expected to like this way more than I did. Bummer, but oh well. I just couldn’t get past how the time travel would actually work and I don’t think it was explained very well. If you can ignore that part and just focus on the love story aspect of it, I think it’s a very lovely book. However, the scenes with young Clare were uncomfortable considering he was a middle-aged man in most of those scenes and she was a teenager. The themes of time and what we do with that time were really solid, but overall I didn’t get the hype, unfortunately.
I read this book in a weekend - having both the luxury of time and finding it to be very engaging. I passed on this book several times at different stores - and then decided to pick it up and was glad I did! I am a big fan of time travel concepts - and found this one to be very fun to work out and confess I did have a sense of what was going to happen (without reading the end!) ... haven't yet seen the movie, but from the movie reviews think that it is probably better to first read the book else the conditions might seem rather implausible.
The book is interesting and the time travel bit is fairly well done. However, I couldn't stand the main character. I thought he was mostly an ass and couldn't understand why his wife decided to remain so true to him. The ending was also rather rushed and not very good.

I loved this novel until I finished. Then, I realized I loved the idea of this novel. It took me a week to finish and, after reading the ending, I felt a bit manipulated. While well-written for emotional impact, I do think the protagonists are pretty empty. I don't think I like that Clare always had Henry in the center of her universe. Her priorities did evolve once they had a kid, but I reject the idea that healthy love between adults can be so all-consuming. We hear abundantly about Henry's loss of his mother, but hardly hear about Claire's loss of her mother. This made the story seem unbalanced and hollow. I would agree with the people who wish the voices seemed more distinct. This felt like another junk food novel.
I loved the movie, but I just could not get into the book. I know some people love reading details and back stories of the characters; however, I just could not read all that. :(
It was aight. Too much foreshadowing helped soften the blow that I didn't want softened. It leaves me with a sense of awe at what a romance can be. Dreamy and wonderful, fulfilling and always craving more. More specifically, a romance marked by longing and waiting. This is a lovely, solidly written book. Slightly annoyed I had to look up the references to other literature / art every 5 pages but here's hoping it broadens my mind.
So, I have to admit that I'm slightly embarrassed to say that I read this book. I should have put it down after the first f-bomb was dropped and then the uncomfortable moments where I thought, oh know she didn't just have them do that and all the craziness of having to just figure out what was happening when. It made my brain hurt. I had been warned that it was bad, I should have headed the warning. Don't read this book.
