DID NOT FINISH

I was listening to the audiobook and dropped it after a few chapters.  I didn't like ages implications of his time travelling in their relationship.  It just felt creepy.  Dropped it pretty quick.

Great novel! I loved how it's set in Chicago and that they talk about many places I've been to: from the Art Institute in downtown to Anne Sather's on Belmont! A very touching love story that shows how time travel affects a relationship from both characters point of views, the good and the bad.

There were some similarities between long-distance relationship and time traveling, such as missing one another and being unable to visit each other, but for the most part I did not relate to the characters, since when I went away my wife did not have to worry about my safety, and I didn't have to mug people or visit earlier versions of myself. But I can see this book relating to more LDR couples back before telephoning and skype calls were a thing.

I find the scenes where Henry travels back in time to meet his wife as a child cute and delightful. This was the book my wife and I chose to read during our honeymoon, and we were absolutely captivated by the book. I highly recommend it everyone who hasn't or has read it!

I especially enjoyed the 1 chapter sequel to Alba. I will definitely pick it up when it's released next year.

emotional sad

I love time travel stories, and I love a good Rachel McAdams romance movie. Tragically, I did not love this book. Romance x Science Fiction is not a genre mix I've encountered often and I was excited for this book. At many points I caught myself comparing this story to another Rachel McAdams fave: About Time, which is a similar genre mix. Where that movie shines for its lovable characters, charming comedy, and believable love story, The Time Traveler's Wife fails on all counts. My fundamental issue with this book is that it's creepy. A forty-something year old man hanging out with a child who will one day grow to be his wife is kinda weird, but maybe I can get over it. A thirty-something year old man struggling to not sleep with a sixteen year old girl, regardless of the rest of the context in the story, is extremely icky no matter what. I could go on and on about scenes in the book that made me deeply uncomfortable. The book was published in the 21st century, and I expected better. Finally, the ending was horrendous and took the book from a 3 to a 2 star in my opinion. Nonetheless, when the book wasn't creepy it was actually quite good. The writing was lush and beautiful, and I liked Henry and Clare's emotional journeys with their family outside of each other (ex: Henry and his father). I also think the premise itself was good and deserves its credit, though the execution was flawed.
