While I wouldn’t add this book to a list of favorites, it was completely un-put-down-able. Sad and sweet, with a few very morally questionable moments. Overall, a mesmerizing and sad thought experiment on the permanence of fate and being unable to leave the past.
i went into this curious because it's so beloved, immediately got tonal whiplash when the two characters meet and clare talks about henry sucking her toes??? then several descriptions of clare that felt very men-writing-women, only for me to realize this was was in fact written by a woman. yikes. reminder that women are not exempt from objectifying their female characters too.
i resolved to continue reading only as an outlet for my favorite hobby (complaining), but the female narrator's child voice for clare's childhood diary was too grating and i couldn't do it.
also overall a weird choice from the author to have henry and clare start dating with an 8-year age gap (clare is 20, henry 28 when they meet in "real time"). like, it's already questionable the fact that henry visits her (several times) as a full-grown adult, naked, when she's in elementary school. and both characters don't have any feelings about this dynamic at all. no, it's not weird at all that clare describes henry as "parental" when she was growing up. yuck, yeah, i'm out.
