The middle was great.

It took me a while at the beginning just to wrap my brain around what the plot was. Once I did, I was truly taken in, but was disappointed in the ending.

This was a difficult book to review for me. I’m leaning toward 3.5 to 4 stars but need to let it sit for a while.

For 2/3 of the book I could not connect with the characters. I was enthralled by the philosophy and science the author spins into the book. Everything is neatly explained and thought out. Then, the emotional connection hits once Claire and Henry are married and start suffering. From then on, cue emotional roller coaster with less philosophy and science. It’s a weird flip. Claire and Henry make morally grey choices that disappoint me with an otherwise “timeless” love story.

I’m very happy I read this book but may be one in which the movie was actually better

Both the movie and the show do a better job of telling this story.

So, when I read this book the first time at, like, 16, I found it quite romantic and beautiful.

Re-reading it as an adult made me very uncomfortable. The eight year real-life age-gap was bad enough, but a forty something year old regularly appearing nude in front of an actual child…. It’s borderline grooming. And 40 something year old Henry taking the FMC’s virginity at 18 was disturbing. I don’t care that they’re husband and wife. It was just really weird. Very different perspective as an adult.

this book gives me the same feeling as being wrapped in blankets on a cozy rainy evening. Absolutely beautiful and gut wrenching at the same time. Had to re-read it. Definitely in my top 5 favourite books of all time

DID NOT FINISH

their relationship made me so uncomfortable - the age-gap thing alone felt weird but the way clare's whole life revolved around henry, and how their relationship seemed romantic even when clare was VERY young just kills my interest in the story. i just don't want to know (i know, i read the summary on wikipedia).
