Great romp! Needed a break from heavy books- this was the right distraction. Moves fast!

I was kind of bored during this one through many sections. I went in with different expectations and couldn’t really get into the character dynamics without being annoyed by several of them. It might’ve helped if the POV transitioned through all four of the characters instead of just Billie’s thoughts.

It also might’ve worked better if the order was switched — meaning open with the women on their retirement cruise and then introduce a flashback chapter. I liked the flashback chapters and almost would’ve preferred more of those. It made me think of that cartoon show Totally Spies (though they’re assassins here). Starting with the cruise would've set the tone and energy better, imo.

Four women are starting retirement just as they started their career — together. While on their farewell cruise, they start to notice that something is off and discover that there are plans to assassinate them. Now, they have to figure out why their old team is hunting them down and who called the order.

The flashback chapters introduce how Billie became involved with this career path and some of her notable jobs.

DNF at 50%, this is just incredibly bland. The characters are all stereotypes, the interesting premise is undersold by its execution, and every plot point is painfully cliché and generic. If you've seen any action/spy movie, you've already experienced this book.

I was going to push through and finish it, the writing itself is bland but easy, but I checked the reviews and it sounds like it's no more interesting in the second half and I've got tons of other books I'd rather give a try.

Read if you like: action over character development, generalized feminist takes, a “where are they now?”

Ngl, sort of dragged myself through this one. Great premise but execution was meh. We didn’t really get any sense of strong bond between the ladies until the second mission they do in Paris. The lack of us getting any sort of flashback that shows a moment where they become super close just made it feel like when you hang with acquaintances. Also they mention certain people here and there that feel irrelevant. Slap on some white feminist takes and that’s the whole drive of this story line.

This was a fun read! The protagonists are four women of 60 years old, about to retire from
their careers as international assassins. Someone tries to kill them and they have to figure out what is going on before the killer can strike again.

If the plot sounds pretty tried and true, you are not wrong. The things that makes it feel fresh are the way the author deals with gender, aging, women’s friendships, and the accoutrements of domesticity. That and a fair amount of humor in the narrative voices.

I listened to the audiobook and the vocal performances by Jane Oppenheimer and Christina Delaine brought the characters to life and added dimension to the story.

Solid ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
