grace draven writes such great thorny/multi-faceted characters who find each other in unexpected circumstances and who, in dark and difficult times, build authentic relationships.

I’ve enjoyed Grace Draven’s other novels - Radiance & Entreat Me - mostly due to the strong female leads. This one had a more timid female lead, Martise, and perhaps that’s why I didn’t initially get into the story. However, I did enjoy the grumpy and callous mage, Silhara and his developing relationship with Martise. I also liked that Draven didn’t write Martise or Silhara as beautiful or breathtaking individuals, that trope gets old after a while. They had their flaws physically and emotionally and that drew them to each other which I found more interesting and enjoyable to read.
The audio version takes some getting used to - it is somewhat monotone with the exception of the character voices that Jay Britton employs which are good and improve the overall quality.

Finished it, but nothing notable about it.
Good on the world building and the writing, but some problematic aspects in the romance. Also very anti climatic and predictable ending

This dark romance surprised me after reading dravens much lighter book- radiance. But I really liked it! It was a quick read with delightful spice and an interesting plot line. I am curious about one element left unexplained at the end and may some day get the second book to satisfy my curiosity. I enjoy dravens writing and development of her female main characters. A bop.
fast-paced
I don’t deal well with themes of betrayal, and I can already tell there will be a lot of that.
