Not sure how I missed this book before but I'm really glad to have found it. By the third page I was completely hooked. Martise is well-drawn and very likeable and Silhara is one of the most compelling anti-heroes I've "met" in a long time. All that brooding, sardonic humor and silky black hair - be still my beating heart.
Even though the novel centers prettly intimately around the main characters, Draven builds a convincing world. Would love to visit again in another story!

Excellent fantasy romance. The world Draven has built here feels well-drawn and huge at the same time. Silhara was perhaps a bit more fully realized than Martise, but I really liked them both. I loved that Martise wasn't a classic beauty - I sometimes get tired of beautiful people everywhere I turn in romance novels. While their relationship started maybe a little slow for my tastes, it did make everything feel well-earned and deeply satisfying. If you like slow burn, you're gonna love it. I already bought the sequel novella, as well as another book by Draven, and can't wait to return to this world.
4.5 stars. Didn't catch me as much as Radiance and Eidolon, but I loved it all the same. Still absolutely loving her writing and characters! And I love this universe too (star was knocked off for this being a tad too long-winded and the fact that I would've loved to learn about Corruption, but felt as if the origin and everything else was breezed over). Can't wait to read more (I'm on a Grace Draven binge right now.)
2020 reread:
I was crazy in 2016. This book lands a place in my book hall of fame. I adore Grace Draven, and coming back to her writing was like walking into a warm, cozy house on a winter day. I adore her, and she reigns supreme for my favorite fantasy romance author. A wonderful, beautifully written, interesting, steamy plot like that had me itching for a second book. Five stars without a doubt. I will forever be a Draven fan.

A bit heavy on description so I just started skipping those paragraphs so I could get to the story.
Another case of horrible covers on great books. This cover isn't as horrible as others, but I loved this book. I'm a huge fan of gruff, grumpy, imperfect heroes, and this book delivered.
Enjoyable, the characters were interesting, and the romance felt genuine and passionate. I liked the cultures within the book
4/5 stars
This was exactly what I needed/wanted to read right now. It was a beautifully sensual, erotic and angsty romance that I loved right from the beginning. I’ve read Grace Draven books before and she is truly the queen of fantasy romance novels. She so perfectly combines magic, pseudo-period drama and romance. This book just screamed atmospheric. It’s one of those books that make you feel as if you’re there and fully connected to the setting and the characters. I just loved these characters so much together, they seemed perfectly in balance! I really have nothing but praise to say for this story. I can’t wait to read more from this author, she is quickly becoming a go-to author for me!

Meh. This story was interesting enough, but not anything to write home about. It certainly didn't keep me on the edge of my seat. It actually took me longer to read than most books of this size because I just wasn't terribly interested in it.
This is the alt pick for October 2012 for the Vaginal Fantasy Hangout and why I read it.
