If Dune and Downton Abbey had a baby in ancient southern China it would be this book. The drama! The politics! The betrayal and yearning and jealousy!! The highs and lows this book gave me were insane. I didn’t think I’d want to read the sequel but once I finished I knew I had to put it on my TBR. I will say that the first half of the book was a bit difficult for me to get through, but the pace and action ramped up exponentially and I found myself flying through the final third.

almost as good as beasts of a little land in the literary historical fiction category. at times so poetic and sardonic that my jaw DROPPED OPEN. apart from the repetition of certain phrases that became kind of annoying, very very good story. extremely careful delineation of emotions which i rly rly liked

This book was the opposite of "this is so good that I couldn't put it down."

I spent the first 70% of it feeling confused and bored and then in the last 30% Parker-Chan ripped the wig off my head and mopped the floor with it. The last bit of this book was absolutely glorious but I had to force myself to get that portion of the book!

I understand that this is a slow-paced book, but I feel like the author put her all into the last bit of the book and basically nothing in the first bit. I guess that's the "The Song of Achilles" influence coming through
