Star Wars novel set between Empire and Jedi. Han is frozen in carbonite and the others try to save him. Complicating matters is Prince Xizor, an underworld leader who wants to replace Vader in the Emperor's favors. His solution--kill Luke. He uses Leia as bait. Vader pursues Luke as well in order to draw him to the Dark Side so they can rule the universe together. But it all works out in the end.
Meh. I like Star Wars, but this book was just boring. No excitement, and knowing that the main characters would all for sure be alive at the end ruins it for me. Average writing at best too.
A bit underwhelming. Just couldn't get into it.
kinda wish I had read this when I was like 12 or 13 and I could’ve loved it the way it deserves.
A great tale that kind of gives reason as to why Luke becomes such a bad ass after when the beginning of Jedi happens. Gives Vader a kind of human appeal.

Three stars is generous. I hated reading about the Arrogant Sex Reptile - I mean, Prince Xizor. The writing itself drove me crazy with silly similes and particularly Lando mansplaining thermal detonator to Leia. She's been in the Rebellion for how long and she can't recognize a thermal detonator on sight?* All this to get a cute nod to show how Leia got the detonator she had in RotJ.
The Vader parts were okay. There was an attempt to get inside his head and show some of his motivations and internal conflict. And the push and pull between Vader and Xizor while the Emperor just watches to see how it all turns out is.... accurate.
I felt like Dash Rendar got the shaft in this story. I know there is a Shadows of the Empire game and maybe there will be more of him in there? But as far as this book goes, I think he had more potential than was played out here.
More like a 2.5 for me, I think. I guess it does fulfill its goal of showing Luke growing in power and skill, and how Leia got the Boushh getup, and many Bothans dying to get the plans for the Death Star II.
* Me calling this mansplaining is half a joke and probably inaccurate, because thanks to the writer Leia in fact cannot recognize a thermal detonator. It's still ridiculous. But of course Xizor can, a few pages later, becuase he's just soooooo awesome. *eyeroll*

The writing is mostly terrible, with a handful of redeeming sections. Liked it when I was 12, but reading the weird obsession with Leia as an adult made me puke in my mouth just a little bit. Star Wars dialogue usually isn't that great, but it would have been nice for the characters to seem consistent with the rest of canon.
