Nothing could’ve prepared me for the heartbreak in this book. While it’s a fictional story, the historical events are real. Stories of immense tragedy are not fiction in the lives of Palestinians which is why this hits so hard. It may as well be a true story. I think a big take away from this is the generational trauma that Palestinians experience. Not only is the trauma passed on but it is ongoing. Every new generation has to face the same yet new brutal horrors inflicted by the occupying  power.

TW for extreme violence and gore Big TW for the Sabra and Shatila massacre

This book was heartbreaking and beautiful. It provided such a very real and heavy account of one family and the generations of tragedy and loss they experienced at the hands of the Israeli occupation. How love still grows amongst a lifetime of fear, displacement and death. How hearts can break and freeze, and that moments of connection with loved ones can save and thaw them. This book was utterly devastating and heart-wrenchingly beautiful. April blooms 🌱

This beautifully written debut novel from Susan Abulhawa tells the story of four generations of the Palestinian Abulheja family. Beginning with their forced removal from Ein Hod in 1948 to the Jenin refugee camp where Amal is born and brings us through her life. We experience her childhood, love, loss, marriage and motherhood.

From heartbreaking moments of loss to the wonderfully magical stories of joy this is a wonderful book.
