I would’ve loved to see more of a zoomed out view of this book’s concept. Being limited to Jean at times felt like just that—a limit. She only knew certain things, had certain perspectives, and often this led to frustration for her and for a reader, particularly given her substance abuse issues. Also the twist felt a bit unnecessary to the broader story? This could’ve been a cleaner narrative, driven home the found family themes, the allegory of the government shutting that shit down, but it just fell a bit flat in its execution of these themes and plot lines. Enjoyable, but didn’t quite reach its full potential.
