Particularly tough to read given the current climate. But really beautiful.

These poems speak of unendurable loss and hint at secrets that we can only guess the truth of; they are frequently short but incredibly powerful. These women and men fight to survive and their struggle is one that must be remembered and speaks as strongly now in terms of current conditions with refugees as it did over 100 years ago.

The perspectives here include women, men and officers on Angel Island. The interlocking narratives are not from one side; everyone (guards, prisoners, the wealthy) play a role in this story. The viewpoints and the speed at which they change are dizzying, but the pieces all fit together like a glove.

I don't read a lot of of poetry, but this one is worth seeking out. Cliche as it may sound, it's poetry for people who don't like poetry. I only wish it had been even longer.
