They Hate Each Other is the kind of rom-com that’s worth going into knowing it’s not all cosy banter and gooey romance. Don’t get me wrong, it’s definitely got that and it’s great but it’s also sobering and devastating at the same time.

It’s a story of two parts: a fun fake-dating romance between two sworn enemies and a story of two boys navigating the heavy weight of expectations, past traumas and painful family dynamics.

Dylan and Jonah are opposites in many ways and I loved watching the way their differences balance each other out and help one another grow. They’re messy, insecure, loving, sensitive, loyal, chaotic, vibrant characters and I loved watching their stories unfold.

There is so much to enjoy about this book. From the fantastic mental health representation to the discussions of race and socio-economics to the supportive friendships and adorable ‘I don’t want to fall for you but I think that’s what’s happening’ moment.

This book was heart wrenching and heart warming in equal measures and I, too, would like to adopt Jonah’s sisters, who were clearly the true stars of the book.

4/5 i liked this book but i need to hammer in how this isn’t a romcom (>﹏<) do not be like me & be fooled by the cute cover & title!

summary:
forced to be eternal thorns in each other's side, jonah & dylan hate each other. if not for their best friends' dating, they'd happily avoid each other at all costs. it isn't until a party at dylan's house, where they sleep (with a Z!) in the same bed that sparks wild rumors, making jonah & dylan finally give in to their friend's hounding about them dating each other. however, they add their own little twist by only pretending to date, and instead work to show how awful they'd be in a relationship. but jonah & dylan can't help their rising affection for each other, and their own lives spiraling out of control make them realize that maybe they get along better than they thought.

i wasn't sure i could be convinced at first but jonah & dylan are soooo adorable together. it was pretty touching how jonah & dylan made each other grow as people, while still being a comforting space for the other to rely on. the transition from rivals to lovers is written well since you can see how jonah & dylan both slowly realized that there’s more to the other’s life & personality than what they assumed, and they both make a healthy amount of compromise that’s needed in any relationship in order to reach that point. and the romance was just cute! idk if it’s because this is on the younger side of YA and so there’s less kissing & cuddling, which made it stand out more, but the intimate scenes we did have were so sweet! 10/10 i’d read another novel just on them being cute together (´︶`)

this book also delved into pretty serious topics, which imo the writer was very respectful in their portrayal. i could really understand jonah & dylan's fears, and the way they reacted in their situations was realistic. it actually hurt how much i could relate to jonah's reaction to money & gifts (╯︵╰) the severity of jonah & dylan's situations was always written well, and solved in a slightly messy but again, very realistic manner. i don't typically go for more serious books since i prefer lighthearted ones, but this book kept me hooked!

onto my problems. i almost rounded down instead of up because i personally found the side cast VERY annoying. luckily it's been a while since i read the book, so i can only picture the good vs the really good parts, BUT i still remember my complaints. so jonah and dylan do not have good friends - spoilers because they are the driving force of the romance plot -
but why did andre instantly spew off to others how jonah slept in the same bed as dylan? why is hannah constantly analyzing their, yes albeit fake, relationship? why is she doing it in public for everyone to hear instead of respectfully asking them in private? the excuse of ‘theyre just teens!’ only goes so far because i cant name of any my old friends badgering me constantly like this. if they were, they werent my friend for long. not to mention how jonah & dylan even got into the fake dating ploy in the first place. why can’t their supposed best friends defend their choice of not dating? especially hannah since she’s ace, who should know what it’s like for others to pry into your love life and assume they know what’s best for you. it was annoying to face throughout the book since we are constantly dealing with much heavier topics like negligent parenting & alcoholism, and yet these 2 leads can’t even catch a break because their best friends are just SO invested in their love lives.

anyways once i got past that i could enjoy the book, i listened to the audiobook and the voices for both jonah & dylan were amazing! definitely helped me get a better feel of the characters & honestly made me like them more ♪( ´ ▽ ` )

☆ i recommend listening to “grow up” by paramore ☆

I never accepted his promise from earlier, but he keeps it anyway. He doesn't let me fall.

This reminded me why I still read YA books from time to time. They usually don't click with me, but this one just hit different. I was not expecting all of the discussions that were had in this little book: from familial love to childhood trauma, I felt that it was all done very well. Not only was I smiling and giggling to myself like a total fool, I also found myself tearing up multiple times because I just loved the dynamic between Jonah and his little sisters. Having two little sisters myself, Jonah's thoughts and fears brought up so many feelings in me; I just loved him as a character. All of the darker moments (please refer to the author's comment on Goodreads for trigger warnings) were beautifully balanced by cute and somewhat cringey scenes like PDA and Jonah acting the clown.

I totally recommend the audiobook, it was really well done - the spanish was gorgeous!

SO GOOD. I really loved that Dylan and Jonah’s dynamic didn’t change that much even after they got together for real, and they were still squabbling, cuz that’s who they are! The ending was great and I loved that Dylan didn’t totally patch things up w his entire family. Loved <3 this book handled a lot more mature themes than the description hinted at at all, which I loved, but might need to be taken with a warning for others!

This was a very well done enemies to lovers. You got a really good understanding of each character and why some of the traits that initially put them at odds actually made them a perfect fit. Was an also a good mix of emotional and funny.
A very enjoyable YA romance.

amazing! i went into the book thinking it would be a short enemies to lovers story, and came out with not only that but a heartbreaking and beautiful story about two characters learning how to move through their trauma and finding comfort in each other. already want to reread it and can’t wait for other books that amanda woody will write!

Obsessed, basically listened for 10 hours straight. An "I can fix him but wait I need to fix myself" masterpiece.
