Oh. My. Goodness. This book... wow. It is safe to say that I loved every single syllable of this novel. I did not want this amazing story to end and even though it is clear that Vaelin's story is far from over, I mourn the ending of this adventure. The story itself is gripping with a nice mixture of past and present, dual perspective and flawed narrators who hide things from each other and the reader. The writing was so easy to get into and you just get swept along in this epic adventure - the basis for which is nothing that hasn't been seen in fantasy before, but Ryan's voice is fresh and engaging, and the characters he creates so endearing that it is quite simply a wonderful read. So if you like your men tall, dark and deadly with a sword- thrown into impossible situations with the weight of mysterious prophecies on their shoulders - then this book is one I guarantee you will enjoy!
Seems I'm in luck lately in the fantasy area. After The Kingkiller Chronicle and The Gentlemen Bastards series I have found Blood Song.
An enthralling story, a page turner and great storyteller and I am hooked, looking forward to the next installment. There was nothing I disliked in this story, not even the "evil" characters, not even the unsolved mysteries, nothing at all.

What a pleasant surprise. A coming of age story for a child sent to an order that trains warriors of faith. At first it seems like it’ll be pretty cookie-cutter but the writing, characterization, and well paced curve balls set it apart. Very enjoyable.
It’s a shame that the next two in the trilogy are supposedly not good. Lots to work with for the first one.

Extremely well written and set at a pace that didn’t allow me to put it down. Plenty of action, engaging characters, mystery, and humor, this book is an excellent addition to the libraries of fans of G.R.R. Martin and Patrick Rothfuss.

A brilliant book that follows the story of Vaelin Al Sorna, who is left as a young boy at the gates of The Sixth Order, who train the warrior elite. The character growth is huge as Vaelin travels a dangerous line of keeping loyal to his superiors and maintaining his moral code.
The world is unique filled with unique cultures and intricate plots which I hope will all be explored with the other books in the series.
I highly recommend. I'm now off to read book 2, The Tower Lord :).

This started off strong, dragged a bit in the middle, and then had a great finish. I almost think it would have been a better book if it was edited down about 100 pages from the middle.
If you haven't read this yet, what are you waiting for? Fantasic!
