I loved this book and, based on this one book alone, Anthony Ryan is now one of my favorite authors. This book reminded me of Name of the Wind, except that the protagonist was less Gary Stuish, and it was grittier, and the author seemed to have more control of the plot which wandered less.

My only criticism of this book is that I have to wait 5 months for the next in the series and who knows how long after that for the third.

usually I know how a plot is going to develop, expecting something that I know is going to happen in a book. But with blood song I was amazed by the ups and downs and that surprised at the end. clearly didn't expect that to happen. Vaelin Al Sorna such a great name! I will really miss Frentis, Caenis, Nortah, Dentos and Barkus even tho you know what happened with the last one. And OMG scratch that fucking loyal hound ahh that was the most hurtful death by far. I wonder what are the other books are going to be about ? definitely the blood song is not over.

This is my third re-read of this book (getting ready to finally finish the trilogy). I just can't get over how good it is. The action is quick and well plotted, the characters are all different and interesting, and, I think most importantly, Vaelin is an interesting, unique character who drives the narrative action of the story. Seems like a really basic thing but A TON of the books I read can't seem to get this right. You can have an overarching plot--hidden evil, plotting king, what have you--and still have the character drive the narrative. Blood Song is terrific at this!

We'll see how I feel about these books after Tower Lord...I remember not loving that one. But I'm more mentally prepared now and I don't have to worry about a dumb cliff hanger at the end so I think it'll be better than last time.

If you like your fantasy Rothfuss or Sanderson-style this is a great book for you. It's a meaty epic fantasy with a really strong main character. I was sucked in and definitely want to read the next one!
