I had high expectations for this novella and it did not disappoint. I read this in one sitting, as I think is best, though I do wish I had saved it for Christmas time. I find it reminiscent of a Christmas Carol, which is mentioned in the text, as it is a short but hard hitting tale set during Christmastime reflection. There characterization was believable and it was refreshing to have a protagonist make the choices you want for him. It took only the time it needed to in order to dare us to be the person we want to be.

There’s something about an Irish book — this condensed novella was shockingly beautiful and gutting at the same time. I don’t know much about the Magdalene laundries but the book gives a feeling of a town being watched throughly. It asks the question of what does it mean to pay kindness forward and what does goodness mean in a beautiful way. My only complaint, as it is with most novellas, is I want to know what happens next. Greedy as always.
