Small Things Like These resonates with Edith Wharton’s Ethan Frome: a pointedly concise yet utterly poignant story of a man and the consequences of life and decisions made. However, as Keegan’s storyline runs parallel with the horrors of the Magdalene laundries, this slim volume gives greater weight as to how the (seemingly) minutiae of everyday life impacts not only those closest to you but also the greater good. A page-turner that lingers with you. Found myself discussing it in depth over dinner.

A perfect book. I’m so moved by its beautiful simplicity.

After being a little underwhelmed by Foster by Claire Keegan as it left me wanting more, I was happy to sink my teeth into a short story by Claire Keegan that was double in length.

I’m not sure what this was all about.

Written well to say the least but then the story has fallen flat. I couldn’t connect with Furlong and all the characters felt very one dimensional except Furlong.

Perhaps its just gone way beyond me because how can such an award winning book with a plethora of 4-5 stars be such a disappointment?!
