This is not a very long read. It's not an easy read, but it's a necessary read. Mychal Denzel Smith so sharply and eloquently examines and critiques the current state of the United States. I loved listening to the audiobook and can't wait for more people to read this.

I learned about Mychal Denzel Smith from the series of letters, Echo, in Kiese Laymon’s book, How to Slowly Kill Yourself and Others in America.

I didn’t know how much I longed to hear other Black men express visions for America rooted in Black feminism and abolition.

Mychal writes towards a place of freedom in Stakes Is High, leaving the reader understanding that revolution is possible but “it will require our radical honesty about who we have been, who we are now, and the courage to move past the discomfort of such honesty towards the tremendous task of building a future worthy of our best ideals.”

I look forward to revisiting this book again soon.
