I really love the way Jeanette Winterson writes. She really has her finger on the pulse of the human condition. She has a beautiful way of putting words to our hopes, dreams, triumphs and failures. Put up for adoption at birth, she came to live with her adoptive parents who were strict fundamentalists. They were cold, unhappy and unloving people. In spite of that, or maybe because of that, Jeanette found her voice, became an author and shares her insights through her widely popular books. I've only read one other book of hers but I'm putting a few more on my to-read list because I love her communicative writing style.
I was very disappointed. I had adored Oranges and was excited to read this book but it was so disjointed that I struggled. There were some very poignant observations in the book that made me grateful to have read it.
Winterson makes no apology for her writing style and judging by the other reviews I am in the minority. I'm happy about that.

A moving memoir with heartfelt and honest observations about life, love, and what it means to pursue happiness. Jeanette Winterson' s writing style reflects her prolific reading history and obsession with mastering the art of writing. Highly recommend!
i would give this book a thousand stars if i could. jeanette winterson has an incredible talent for story telling, she writes so complex yet so simple & beautifully. this book really has everything i love reading about: queer coming of age, working class background, religious trauma, advocating for libraries and literature, the creative in general. i haven’t read a lot of stories about adoption but this might be the most real one. jeanette winterson, the incredibly talented amazing woman you are!
3.5⭐️I liked this but I don't think it's distinct enough from 'Oranges' to necessarily warrant a second book. If I'd read 'WBHWYCBN' without having read 'Oranges' I think I would've given it 4⭐️ but because thats not the case I can't help but view then together - both brilliant but the latter somewhat superflous.
Also, the focus here was more centered on adoption / wanting to know about her birth parents - something I'm sure would appeal to some readers, but wasn't what I was drawn to her for.

this is my new favourite book. comfortably takes over the role of 'best book I have read this year'.
I expect I will be reading it again soon and then repeatedly.
right time, right place to be the perfect book for me.
