I enjoyed reading this book . In the compound we follow our main character Eli and his family while they are living in a underground " fallout" bunker. Eli and most of his( his twin brother and grandma didn't make it) family entered the bunker after a missile attack left the world above unlivable. When Eli's makes a discovery he begins to question his fathers honesty. Eli must uncover his fathers secrets in order save himself and his family
OK so i have mixed feelings on this book.
THINGS I LIKED
- I loved the way Eli's character grew and, I feel that the emotions Eli had where portrayed in a very realistic way
- The survival aspect of this book was very realistic, this made the story more enjoyable. Canned food has a self life and i feel that the fact that they had food problems because of this made the book more believable for me
- The way that Eli's Fathers mental illness is portrayed. It showed how mental illness not only affects the mentally ill but also affects those close to them
THINGS I DIDN'T LIKE
- Sometimes while reading this book i felt like i really had no idea what was going on. So things were not explained very well. For Example when Eli's father
- i really didn't like how the author refereed to the
Overall I will likely someday read the second book but it is not high on my TBR

I really enjoyed this book. Parts felt a bit predictable to me, but that didn't keep me from liking the storyline. My students told me this was a fast-paced book that I wouldn't want to put down, and they were right. This was a quick read.
A re-read....in anticipation of teaching it to my 9th graders next year. This book still hooked me. Off to reread the sequel.
The book starts with panic, everyone is thrown into the compound, an underground nuclear shelter build by Rex(dad). The dad explains that there was in attack and they had to stay. It is soon discovered that gram and Eli’s twin brother, eddy, were left outside, left for dead.
Six years later. The family is still in the compound. Dad, mom, Lexie (adopted daughter), Eli, and terese. Food is starting to run low and is estimated that they will run out a year before their 15 year mark when it will be safe to leave. The dad had decided to create supplements (having kids that will be used as the “food”). There are 3 supplements that are taken care of by all but Eli who refuses to go near them. Eli discovers that dad put a computer in eddys room, an old version that could connect to the internet. When Eli discovers he’s connect he starts to question his dad and the reason they are in the compound. Eli finds out through IM that eddy and gram are alive and everything on the outside is fine. The rest of the family was presumed dead by an RV crash. No one knows that Eli and his family are in the compound. Eli questions his dad and he freaks out. Eli fights him and he hits his head. Eli tries to piece together the code for the door to get out. When Eli gets out he runs into his dads accountant who had rigged the compound to explode. When they fight the button is pushed and they have ten minutes. Eli rushers back in to get the others. It is unknown if the dad gets out or not.
I liked this book. It was predictable up to a point but some things threw me off.
The dad made the kids try breast milk
The dad hinted at Eli and Lexie creating supplements.
Canablism ( using the supplements as food)

WOW! And I mean wow. Twisted and crazy, dystopia to the extreme.
What would you do to survive??
That's a tough question, right? What would you do to live?
And I can't imagine the planning that goes into survival, especially when you think of long term survival for a family. This book was really good and kept me thinking and guessing.
I can't wait to read book 2!!

The Compound is a thrilling novel that is packed with many twists and turns as well as a multitude of secrets. I found the concept to be highly intriguing and original as I'd not read anything similar prior to reading this book. I found the beginning to be a little slow but only for a handful of chapters. Once the suspicions began rooting themselves in the protagonist Eli's mind, the remainder of the novel really flew by rather quickly. I was in that had- to- know- what- was- coming- next trance, not being able to read as fast as I wished I could. I think The Compound is marketed as a dystopian novel but above all I see it as more of a thriller/suspense sort of book. And that is all I can tell you. Nonetheless, it's a captivating read.
As always, I pretty much speculated through the entire book's duration. I was on the right track but not entirely so as I did not predict the final larger twist whatsoever which is excellent! It's always kind of a downer when you are correct with your predictions especially with books such as The Compound whose one of many intentions is to keep the reader veiled in secrecy. The best part for me is always the excitement that is affiliated with not knowing the whole truth and then discovering it at the end and being equally as excited by the surprise of it all. But being a frequent reader and or movie watcher can at times take this sort of thing away from you as you start to get good at predicting and picking up on premature hints. That's why not being able to uncover everything by the end is a very large plus in my eyes.
I enjoyed the characters in this novel although I do admit that the driving force for me was the plot. It's what really hooked me in and kept me reading for consecutive hours. I did like the connection between certain members of the family especially between Eli and his two sisters. They were terribly mean to one another at times but I found that to be realistic and very much enjoyed watching them grow and come together when the time came for them to do so.
Overall: The Compound is a fairly short read packed with a lot of secrecy and suspense. It is one of those novels that you will not be able to put down until you have finished. If you're looking for something intriguing and fun to read, The Compound is definitely a great choice.

Every word creates the finishing touch! Worth the read.
An extremely interesting premise.
The biggest flaw is the writing, it's just so bad, even for YA.
Also, we're supposed to believe that a genius fifteen year old that's done nothing but read classics and study languages for six years in a bunker away from the internet knows fluent l33t speak???

Loved the plot idea. The quality of writing was poor, though the story was told well. This created a jarring reading experience.
When you're the son of a billionaire, you get certain perks. For example, if nuclear war breaks out, instead of dying like everyone else, you and your family simply go to the giant underground compound your father built and wait 15 years for the radiation to reach safe levels. It sounds crazy, but this is exactly what happened to Eli Yamacakis and his family.
The compound was stocked with enough food and supplies to last 15 years, and Eli's father made sure it had everything Eli, his mother, and his sisters could ever want - a theater with thousands of DVDs, an exercise room, musical instruments - but after being there for only 6 years, the food supply is dwindling and Eli's father has started acting very strangely... Is there more going on in the compound than Eli knows?
This one was only okay for me. I didn't love reading about Eli because he was such a brat for most of the book, and I felt like I never really got into the minds of his sisters or mother. I had a hard time buying into Eli's father's reasoning, so some of the plot twists felt flimsy to me. Despite those issues, this was a suspenseful story with a cool premise. Guys who liked the Maze Runner would probably like it.
