I'm not quite sure what I just read. Baxter's book was pretty good, though I can't decide on the story he was trying to tell. Was it about family? Travel? History? Humanity? I can't really say. When I first started reading the book, the lack of quotation marks and sudden scene jumping threw me for a bit of a loop, but it's easy enough to get into once you know it's coming. I found some of the memories within the main character's thoughts were unnecessary, as well as some of the history bits that I think don't tie in too well. Overall, I'd say that this book has its ups and downs, but it really is quite decent.

Left me speechless. Don't let Baxter's blunt sentences trick you. This is a frightfully powerful novel, a true reminder of the capacities of literature.

I can absolutely understand why some people didn't like this book - it has a very distinct tone and bleakness that just wouldn't appeal to everyone. It is exactly the kind of book I enjoy though, so I fell in love with it right away.

The fact that the novel takes place in one of the most mundane, uncomfortable places of all (an overcrowded airport, waiting for a delayed flight) should tell you how the book will go. It's a slow build, but it's gripping, and Greg Baxter writes in a very comfortable way. There are no quotation marks or chapters, so it can be a bit confusing at times as to who is speaking when, but it suits the hazy-memory narration very well.

Ultimately this book felt like a chilly, rainy day to me. I wanted to wrap myself up in blankets and lose myself in its coldness. It may not be for everyone but if you enjoy slow, bleak books, this is a great one.
