picked this up for a book club - sci-fi isn't usually my jam, but like the martian, the humour within completely won me over, as such, I think my rating has bumped up. but really enjoyed myself!

Loved the concept and the humour, but thought the actual plot was a bit meh in the second half.

Solid silly entertainment with a fair bit of plot armour in Act 3.

Reads like a movie, and I want to see this on screen. For some reason I'm seeing this being a Christmas movie, with at least one shitty felt Christmas cap, one Christmas song, and a stupid use of "ho-ho-ho". And I want to see the billionaire guy try fighting tree crabs before being eaten by them. One crab chokes on a bone later, because that guy would be a dick even in death.

I really enjoyed this. It made me laugh a lot. A very funny parody of Godzilla, monster tropes, politics, military budgets, sci-fi & humanity’s tendency to also act like an abominable monster.

But, it’s got a lot more fantasy then I want in a story. I have a very low threshold for that genre. And being focused to learn about the reproduction cycle of a fictional monster was a drag.

I can’t give it 5 stars, even though I did really enjoy most of it.

“Starter Villain” is still my favorite.
