#MMD Book Club March 2019 pick

A classic novel originally published in 1923 has totally captured my admiration almost 100 years later. I absolutely adore these four unrelated, British woman who decide to spend the month of April in an old Italian hillside castle for four weeks of rest and relaxation. Each comes to the adventure from different social backgrounds and each walks away with different insights and perspectives whether they wanted to or not. Delightful!

Finished it just in time!

It was going great…then men showed up. I wasn’t going into this book expecting much romance so I was surprised and a little disappointed. I enjoyed the interactions between the women of different class and generations. As soon as the men showed up one by one the characters completely stopped any interesting development and the dynamics between the women fell flat. I know this book was written in the early 1900s but the way it forced all the women to be happy with a man even if it made no sense to their character was annoying.

This is a perfect book to read in spring though, the holiday vibes are addicting.

The first Sex and the City, except it’s in an Italian mansion and there is a war going on

Started off promising, then devolved into the insipid and boring.

I was also so disappointed that after a day in Italy the main character felt the need to invite her husband after rather purposefully leaving him behind. God forbid women do anything without their husbands. Ugh!

absolutely lovely and delightful, and a strong reminder how men ruin everything

maybe the enchanted april is the friends we made along the way. this book is a very slow-burn one it hurts. by page 88, the women had just settled into san salvatore. will come back next april for that mamma mia feel, i hope.
