oh. my. *excited gasping*
turn after turn after turn i was hooked! like everything the characters did, everytime they thought they had another clue for the mystery, I was like yup that makes sense that's how it works in my mind that's gotta be it. felt like scooby-doo following all the leads as they came along (and yes, scooby-doo  I don't watch a lot of crime/adventure/mystery shows lol). I've read a fair amount of books with magic while growing up and most of the time the magic's just there. I've read few books that talk about the magic and how it feels and how it casts and oh my gosh even how it smells?!?! I LOVED IT! I loved the way I was able to read and completely understand what each character was doing with the magic and also at the same time I could totally also feel it as if I was doing it! this book it was just it was so good. I don't even know how to describe everything I feel about it. Maeve and Hanna and how they developed together and learned to lean on each other through their traumas while still creating this sweet romance even with all the deep dark shit around them. I could go on and on and stop making sense talking about this book. I cannot wait for the second one!

Thank you so much to Kenzie for sending me an ARC of her book!

This book follows Maeve and her journey through love, family, magic, and evil as she tries to defeat the Shadow King along with the help of the mysterious girl Hanna who literally came to her as an astral projection.

I ate this book right up. Literally devoured it. Less than thirty pages in and I was hooked. Every free moment I have from last night when I started this book to right now was used up reading because I could not put this book down unless I was literally forced to. I also did indeed tear up and cry a bit towards the end I'm not going to lie to you guys.

This book is a modern fantasy set in a fictional magical town with a rich magic system influenced by European paganism with some Roman influence as well.
I love seeing men meet their downfalls and this book did not leave me wanting in that aspect let me tell you.

But also....sapphic witches <3

tw// blood & gore, murder, manipulation, mention of past parental death, violence, mentions of death of children (i might be missing some but I'll add more if I remember)

This is the story of a young girl with astounding power who needs to learn to master her magic and accept her power in the face of multiple betrayals, attacks on her city and the ones she loves and the sudden illness of her brother so that she can save them all from a Shadow Demon.

The world that this author has created is built so very beautifully. Every scene is written with such detailed descriptions of the setting that you feel as though you're in the room with the characters. The magic system that she's created is well described, the social heirarchy within this world is well established and easy to understand. The world building is layered into the story progressively and not thrown in your face all at once. This was a world I could easily and enjoyably find myself lost in as I read.

The characters were lovable, diverse, unique and interesting. Getting to know them was a treat and the author did a very good job of making you feel for the characters whether it be good feelings or bad. The villains of the story were most certainly terrible but were given motives for their actions that make you almost feel sorry for them. The character development for some characters was huge. The romance plotline in this story was so sweet and heartwrenching all at once. I love a good sapphic romance and I hope that we get more books to see a happy ending to this love story.

The plot was fast moving, the problems in the story were constantly shifting and evolving as new questions and answers came to light. There was never a dull moment and there were a handful of unexpected plot twists that left me reeling. I rarely knew who to trust or what was coming next. When I thought I knew exactly what was coming another layer was added to the story that left me guessing again. The ending of this book had me in actual tears and then craving more of this story.

Overall this was an amazing book and I highly recommend reading it.

Good pacing

Easy to read but not in the way that makes the read feel like it’s too simple

I felt the main relationship was dynamic and there a lot of little things you could read between the other characters.

The world building and magic is softly layered in. It isn’t info dumping and builds upon itself gradually

I like Maeve’s narrative voice, very spunky but heartfelt

I can really see this being traditionally Published and well received.

I’m super proud of my friend. I was tryinf to be brutal for her
