the executive dysfunction and the fear of finishing the series kicked in right as i started this one so it took me FOREVER. like, i'm reading along to the audiobook and i technically read it in three sittings, but there were whole DAYS between them.

i don't think i have much words for this one. the drawings were absolutely phenomenal once again, they really did get better as the series progressed.

and i worked/am hoping to build a career on wildlife conservation. i think this book has a massive conservationist message. i remember clouded leopards. i remember javan tigers. i remember the black rhinoceros. there is a photo of the last ever seen-in-the-wild barbary lion in a beach taken from the top of a cliff that looks so lonely it makes my heart squeeze. there were dragons when i was a girl.

I am not okay. I will never be okay. This was perhaps the most perfect ending ever to the most perfect series ever. And I will never be okay again.

It has been an amazing journey with Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third and Toothless the dragon. A journey full of tears, fear and laughter. On one hand, I am sad to see it end. But this is not good-bye. Not really.

I adore this entire series - I'm in tears every book.
I would recommend this series for everyone, but especially for parents looking for a book about emotions, loss, grief, and friendship for young boys. Hiccup experiences all these things and the story so gently treats his emotional responses, while maintaining swashbuckling action and excellently puerile humor.
The narration's reminders that grief is human and trying your best sometimes means accepting failure hit home even as an adult reader.
