I don’t understand the hype of this book.

Whilst yes, I did enjoy the enunciation and descriptions of the smaller things in life; which is how I see the world as an autistic person, I could relate to the long-winded explanations of such simple tasks in life as I do this myself. My inner monologue is exactly like this so it was refreshing to see such accurate depictions in a book. However, I do also agree with others that it was very monotonous and a little boring/agitating. Nothing really happens. There’s no real excitement. It’s just a short novella about a misogynistic man who takes advantage of his fiancés generosity and loses his wife and marriage due to his weaponised incompetence. A very short and simple book, that I unfortunately wasted an audible credit on to read for book club.

A quick, one hour read that swept me up in its realism. The stories are enchantingly real. Antarctica will have you, no pun intended, shivering with dread. Claire Keegan has become one of my favorite authors.

Interesting, to say the least. I enjoyed these short stories, but they are bleak. This is not a feel-good read, but it’s not really a feel-bad read either. These characters are living life, making decisions, and then faced with the consequences, some of them more dire than others.

Beautiful writing but on the dark side, especially third story Antarctica (see content warnings)
The characters have stayed with me.
Common thread that I found was how unhealthy or even dangerous it can be for women to reflexively feel obligated to be polite or accommodating when encountering men who are inconsiderate, domineering or even threatening.
So important to trust and value your instincts and not give automatic benefit of the doubt because you are a woman.
