So Late in the Day consists of three short stories. The title story tells of a man who loses a lover and ruminates on it during a long weekend. "The Long and Painful Death" is the story of a woman writer whose writing in an historic house is interrupted by an unexpected visitor. The third story is titled "Antarctica" and was my favorite. It is the story of a married woman who spends a weekend in the city with a stranger.
While the stories were well-written and passed an afternoon, I have preferred Keegan's novellas.

Oof. These stories were really disturbing. Very well written but so very disturbing. This was my second Claire Keegan book, and the other one was lovely. I am hoping the third one is, too.
3 short stories about relationships between men and women - failed marriage engagements, men intruding on women, women assuming the best in men but FAFO’ing for eternity. Very short, well paced writing that is very easy for read. I could easily envision the settings Keegan describes - even the temperature and smells in the air. It will leave you slightly hopeless about male/female relations though.
