Honestly it could be a 4 or even 4,5 but the length was just unnecessary.

This was such an immersive read. I felt like I was really there. It was terrifying and brutal, but still very interesting.

Even though I was looking forward to reading this book, I was concerned about the length. I've been burned by 400-page horror books before!
But the pacing in the book was excellent. There's enough action, gore, and horror throughout the story to keep things interesting, and all that is woven together with good characters and emotional connection. Also, some interesting facts about sign language!
One of my few criticisms of this book is that there are a lot of characters, and I was getting mixed up with the switching POVs during chapters. Also, there was a line of investigation going on with one of the scientists that I don't think ever got resolved.
The ending felt slightly abrupt, but the book was tense and exciting, and I liked the amount of information we got about the mermaids. And the fact that more info did not mean more likely to survive.
Generally, a very good horror book with mythical creatures, violent deaths, and the horrors of the open ocean.

Wonderfully fast-paced. Characters have well-developed individual voices. Can't believe I haven't read anything from this author before!!
