Discussed this book with bookclub and I decided to give it two stars. I was thinking 2.5 but I gave books I liked better 3 so two it is.

There is a lot of world building information that just doesn’t stick. The same with the characters.

So many pages and I still couldn’t find a story

Dialog was good. Enjoyed the sassy ex Fury. But the rest was way overwritten. The plot was only ok. I really wanted to like this. Disappointed to say the least.

“For example today I was wearing a black corset with matching lace around it and a black leather miniskirt, pink fishnets and black combat boots. I was wearing black lipstick, white foundation, black eyeliner and red eye shadow. I was walking outside Hogwarts. It was snowing and raining so there was no sun, which I was very happy about. A lot of preps stared at me. I put up my middle finger at them.”

I enjoyed the plot but I found the multiple povs confusing at times.

I just finished this book and I really enjoyed it. The mystery was set up really well, the plot was captivating and it was interesting to see the story unfold in a modern, urban setting. Additionally, the four main characters got to meet each other in a way that felt authentic, which I really appreciated. I also find the themes of the book (young people being ignored by authorities, systemic discrimination (concerning the ironborn)) relatable, and I loved the mlm and wlw representation. Plus, it was easy to root for the protagonists and their relationships, and the genderqueer representation was great! Aside from that, I have some criticism to share. First off, I think there are parts of the story where it suffers from a tell-don't-show-problem, especially in Arlo's chapters. Arlo's character in general felt a little generic to me and I think she trusted Nausiscaä too quickly considering the circumstances of their first meeting(s). I also don't like the chosen-one-vibes she gives off, but that's just a personal preference. On the other hand, she had some great dynamics with other characters and I hope to see her character with more nuance in the second book!

dnf at 26%. I read about 16% and didn't get much farther for months and months and I gave it another go today but just couldn't find it in me to get attached to it. decided to let it go for now rather then force myself through more of it when I wasn't feeling it. might come back to it one day and start from the beginning again but today is not that day
