A Night's Tail

Sofie Kelly

3.95 AVERAGE

Every time a Sofie Ryan mystery is published, I am among the first readers. Love the series, the characters and the kitties. Well done plot. Just a fun read!
funny lighthearted mysterious fast-paced

A silly book?  Yes, but a great diversion from things going on.

This is the book that finally broke me into googling if this author was Canadian. A lot of the previous books gave me clues she maybe was but to mention the CFL? She had to be. And she is! Yay!

Couple of questions: what were the other two CFL teams that this guy played for? It’s all I could think about.

Also I am sorry to this narrator for being forced to do accents. That Montréal accent made me both laugh and cringe so much. It was so bad. I love this narrator but she cannot do any accent but her own.

4 Stars
This book is worth four stars for this one quote alone.
I unfolded the shirt and laughed. I held it up so he could see. Across the front was my favorite Groucho Marx line: Outside of a dog, a book is man’s best friend. Inside of a dog, it’s too dark to read.

The book has a huge cast of characters, centering on Kathleen, Maggie, Ethan and Marcus with the two star magical cats Hercules and Owen.
SpoilerLate in the book Owen points Kathleen in the direction of a red herring but in the meantime gets her trapped.

One thing I really expected to see because of the old principle "show a gun in the first act".
SpoilerWhen Kathleen used Milo's lock pick trick on Melanie's office.

Ending
SpoilerI'm really glad that Kathleen told Marcus the truth about the three cats and also glad that he didn't freak out to bad on her for keeping it secret. I certainly hope that holds true in the future books

Cozies Reading Challenge

This review is for the audiobook version. I enjoy this series and look forward to listening them when I buy a new one. I love the characters and the cats. It has the right amount of suspense to relax to and not walk away with a headache; that’s how invested in these stories I get.

This turned out to be a light and easy read with a little bit of mystery, magic, and small-town charm. I actually expected the cats to have a bigger part in the plot beyond the typical cat antics, and the brief 'magical' ones didn't really feel all that necessary. I actually think it would play out better if they just happened to be regular cats. Of course, I'm getting into the series on book 11, so it might just be that I'm missing something from previous volumes to help it make sense.
And on that note, this is one of those books where you can jump in on book 11 and not worry about not being able to understand the world. Kelly does a great job of setting the location and the characters and giving just the right amount of background information for both new readers without wasting pages on things that avid readers already know.
All in all, it's a good book to pass the time but it didn't leave me with a desire to read previous or subsequent volumes. It was, for me, one of those perfectly fine books that help you pass a pleasant few hours and then you forget about.

A Night’s Tail by Sofie Kelly is the eleventh A Magical Cats Mystery and a joy to read. I like the author’s casual and engaging writing style. I was quickly drawn into this cute cozy mystery with librarian, Kathleen Paulson and her two magical cats, Hercules and Owen. The beginning with Mary is hysterical (I do not want to spoil it for you). Kathleen’s brother, Ethan is visiting town with his band, The Flaming Gerbils. The group recently lost one of its members to art school, so Derek Hanson has been playing with them. Derek ends up the top suspect in a businessman’s murder after having an altercation with him at a bar. Ethan asks Kathleen to prove Derek’s innocence. Kathleen soon finds the victim had a checkered past which leads to multiple suspects. There are good clues to help readers in solving the whodunit before Kathleen zeros in on her quarry. The cats help guide Kathleen along the way and provide some pivotal clues. There are charming cozy moments as Kathleen spends time with brother, enjoys outings with friends, plans a quilt show at the library, dates with her boyfriend, and interacts with her cats. Owen and Hercules are cute and clever felines. I like how Kathleen talks to them (uses them as a sounding board) and they respond with their little noises. Owen, of courses, manages to dismember a catnip chicken or two (he is addicted to catnip much to his brother’s disgust). Kathleen finds it is time to tell Marcus about his feline’s special ability, but she is not sure how he will react to the news. If you are new to A Magical Cats Mystery series, I recommend reading Curiosity Thrilled the Cat first. It will provide you with needed background information. I wish there had been less repetition of case details as Kathleen shares what she has uncovered with others and discusses the case with her cats. I had to laugh when Kathleen called Owen and Hercules “two mooching furballs” as they tried to acquire human food from Ethan (I had a cat like that). A Night’s Tail is a spellbinding tale with a catnip chicken catastrophe, quilt show quandaries, a cookie calamity, and a busy brother with a bothersome bandmate.
