This was a fun version of Dirk Gently - not as good as the books or the show, by any means, but still fun.

The more graphic novels I get under my belt, the more I fall in love with this medium. Once I open one up, I just can’t seem to put it down. Which was very much the case with this one, once I got started I couldn’t get enough! While the story was completely unrelated to the tv show (which is what made me pick up this graphic novel) I loved it anyways! It held all the essential bits of Dirk that make him so great and make you fall in love with him, all while presenting us with new characters and a new storyline.

I was expecting much more of a Douglas Adam feel to this. In that I was disappointed. The book, as well as the show, are both brilliant and this was so pale in comparison.

What it’s about: The further adventures of Dirk Gently, Holistic Detective - now in graphic format! A collection of comic books that present two complete stories about Dirk's adventures. The first finds him travelling to Africa to try to find the voices of some people who have lost their ability to communicate. The second has serial killers and reanimated Egyptian mummies. The one thing that ties it all together is the weird and wild Dirk Gently.

What I thought: I haven't read the original Dirk Gently book in decades, so I'm coming at this graphic novel from a place of just-enough-info-to-be-a-problem.

I liked that there seemed to be some background about Dirk as having psychic powers of some sort. I'm very intrigued by that idea, and would love to see more exploration of that mysterious past.

Why I rated it like I did: The stories were interesting, but also a bit tough to follow in places, as the whole point is that things that seems completely random are actually all related. I also got a bit tired of the format - it's a net gimmick once, but one after the other after the other gets a bit repetitious. Also, the completely random mixing of genres was a little disorienting to me; it didn't seem to fit with the "rules" of the storytelling. Finally, the first story was interesting (if really weird), but the second story was extremely "meh" for me.
