This is my favorite of the Earthsea books so far. I've been reading them in order of publication. And this one feels richer, than any yet… which is saying something considering this series.
It is not typical fantasy. It questions fantasy and the assumptions therein. It does not give answers, but leaves the reader space to make up their own mind.
I seem to love the Tenar books the most. Nothing against Ged. He is a good protagonist. But Tenar's arc shows so much more about the world. Her books are a beautiful contrast.

This might be the best of the Earthsea books. It's such a deeply intimate examination of trauma and the role gender plays in how each of us manifest our power - power that is treated as a burden.
It's dark, and the characters make it so extremely real - but le Guin manages to move the story forward in bounds at every point. Some might find that the story wraps up too quickly - but I'm glad it didn't. I didn't want to wallow in the pain of the second-to-last chapter, and I'm so glad that the story wrapped up as nicely as it did.
Such a great read.

I loved this book. Loved it. By far my favourite one out of the Earthsea books so far! I wish it would've been longer though. There was a lot more I would've liked to read. The ending felt a bit rushed. And though I appreciate the message, it felt a bit less thought provoking and more "I'll spell it out for you" than the other books. But I enjoyed reading it a lot so it's still 4 stars
