Star Trek, Volume 9: The Q Gambit by Mike Johnson

'Star Trek: Ongoing, Volume 9: The Q Gambit' finds classic villain Q visiting the new crew of the Enterprise among others. It's a pretty classic Q sort of story.

We start with Q visiting/pestering Jean Luc Picard as Jean Luc is trying to enjoy a hot cup of tea. This story takes place just prior to the events in the Star Trek reboot movie. Spock has led the Romulans away, and supposedly died as far as Jean Luc knows. This leads Q into an alternate timeline where he meets up with Captain Kirk and challenges his notion that there are indeed no-win situations. He sends the Enterprise across the galaxy to prove this. From here, there are spoilers I'd rather let the reader find out. Of course, only Q has his best interests in mind, and it turns out to be a pretty good story, putting Q in with the new movie cast.

The art by Tony Shasteen is made to look like a animation over live action style, like in the movie 'A Scanner Darkly' or those Schwab commercials from a few years back. The effect works pretty well, but sometimes the character's faces appear a little distorted, and the black lines are a bit thick in places. But it's effective, and fun to read something where the characters seem so recognizable. I like the idea of Q battling wits with Chris Pine's Kirk, and it gets pulled off pretty good here. The additional surprises were a really nice touch and I enjoyed the story quite a bit.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Diamond Book Distributors, IDW Publishing, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

I received a free electronic ARC of this graphic novel from Netgalley in return for an honest review.

Who else could bring together the alternate timeline created in the Star Trek movie universe with the the already established timeline on ST:TNG but Q? Eager to prove to James T.Kirk that there is indeed such a thing as a no-win scenario, Q transports Kirk, crew, and Enterprise over 100 years into the new timeline. It is an interesting story with a egaging plot that spans the Star Trek universe and features cameos from many characters from ST:TNG and ST:DS9. The artwork is well done. I enjoyed the graphic novel a great deal.

I received this book free from NetGalley for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinions or the content of the review.

I have always like Star Trek but I have never read any of the books or comic books. This was a fun story about going forward in time and the team saving the universe from evil. I would recommend Star Trek: Ongoing Volume 9: The Q Gambit to Star Trek fans and to those who enjoy comic books. I would probably read other volumes in this series of comic books. It was interesting to see that the artist drew the characters from the new movies rather than the older ones.

The crossover of Deep Space 9 and Next Generation casts with the current blockbuster version was awesomely done without feeling too forced.

Wonderful! Loved seeing all the characters I love get to interact in new ways! I honestly wish it was longer, maybe a novel or something so that I could get more of the backstory of this Worf and Sisko and the game etc. Like all Mirror Universe episodes there’s a lot of “why would they even all still know each other?” But it’s fun all the same and the writing is great especially for the reboot Kirk Spock and McCoy.

Disclosure: I received this free from Netgalley

First, I admit I am not all that knowledgeable about Star Trek culture in general and had to ask my boyfriend to identify characters quite a few times. That being said I really liked this and how it combined characters from many different shows into one story. The artwork was okay, but it wasn't anything super special. I felt a lot of times the characters lacked a bit of facial expression but this might just be the style that was aimed for. That being said - it's inspiring me to dig up some of these shows to watch them, and anything that does that must be pretty good!

While the Primeverse part was a bit out of character and far from being canon, the Kelvinverse story was actually really good. The best I’ve read yet.
Only that every well-known ‚future‘ character is introduced by appearing suddenly is a little annoying, thus only four stars.

I really enjoyed this comic. It combined characters between Star trek generations and portrayed them perfectly. When I read this, I felt like I could here the voices of the characters, like Chris Pine's Kirk. The portrayal was really accurate. The disdain from Bones and the logicalness of Spock were radiating. The story was inteiguing and really made me think. Overall I would recommend this to any Star Trek fan.
